Community-Driven Park Renovation Celebrates Multicultural Neighborhood

Verbena Park

Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) contracted Logan Simpson to provide public engagement, design services, construction documentation, and construction administration for this neighborhood park renovation project. Located in East Colfax, one of Denver’s most internationally diverse neighborhoods known for its vibrant arts community, cosmopolitan restaurants, and long-term residents, Verbena Park serves as a neighborhood gathering space. The firm worked closely with DPR to build community consensus through a transparent and inclusive public outreach process, ensuring the design reflected the neighborhood’s diverse population and rich cultural identity.

Project improvements included renovating the playground with innovative equipment featuring rope climbers and a distinctive tower with cloud-shaped shade structures. Honoring the community’s international heritage, a new concrete multi-use court was designed for both basketball and Futsal, a traditional Uruguayan sport. Additional enhancements were made to existing baseball and multi-use fields. Verbena Park now offers enhanced recreational and leisure space where neighbors can gather, play, and celebrate their community.
