Empowering Driggs: health, housing, and community for a thriving future

Uniquely Driggs Comprehensive Plan

Nestled between the Tetons and Big Hole Mountains, Driggs, Idaho, is home to 1,800 residents. Logan Simpson developed a Comprehensive Plan Update emphasizing health in the built environment. The town’s tourism-driven economy has struggled since the 2008 recession, resulting in unbuilt lots and a housing shortage. To address this, Logan Simpson and consultants explored various housing programs to support workforce housing and a balanced economy.

As an inter-city airport, the plan’s land use must comply with ITD regulations concerning crash and transition zones. Close collaboration with the Driggs Airport Board was essential to ensure compliance and support airport operations, especially as residential development approaches its boundaries. The Airport Master Plan was created alongside the Comprehensive Plan to maintain regulatory consistency.

The plan also prioritized health metrics and Hispanic outreach, contributing to its recognition with the 2020 Western Planner Rural Innovation Award. Efforts included bilingual materials, partnerships with the Hispanic Resource Center, and engagement with local students, effectively reaching historically underrepresented communities. This comprehensive approach not only aims to improve housing and infrastructure but also fosters community engagement and inclusivity.
