Documenting Kennecott’s legacy through the words of its people

Rio Tinto Kennecott Oral History Interviews

Logan Simpson partnered with Rio Tinto Kennecott (RTK), the second largest metal and mining company in the world, to document the history of mining in the Oquirrh Mountains. To preserve the mine’s history, besides the written records, Logan Simpson assisted in conducting interviews with individuals who were primarily former RTK and Kennecott (RTK was formally known as Kennecott Copper) employees. These personal interviews provided knowledge and experiences of the Bingham Copper mine, which is the deepest open-pit copper mine in the world, and the mining industry. These individual narratives were transcribed and provided to RTK, along with audio recordings, so future generations can appreciate and learn from RTK’s employees’ firsthand experiences.
