Design of public spaces with water wise planting

Englewood Police Headquarters

Logan Simpson designed the streetscape, site, and entry plaza areas for the new Englewood Police Headquarters, completed in 2019, as a subconsultant to HDR Architecture. Located directly across from Miller Field Park, the landscape design strategically narrows the adjacent street to one-way traffic and utilizes curbless pedestrian plaza paving to provide seamless connectivity to the park. Site amenities include a main entry plaza with permeable pavers, public and employee plaza spaces, and thoughtfully integrated security features such as lighted security bollards and concrete planters. Although not pursuing LEED accreditation, the landscape design follows water-wise principles through permeable pavement systems, xeric plant materials, and minimal turf grass use. The project successfully achieves its goal of tying the Police Department into the fabric of the community, with HDR noting, “The design is elegant and welcoming. A great pedestrian experience.”
