NHPA Section 110 Survey

Canyons of the Ancients National Monument Veach Acquisition Cultural Resources Inventory

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Canyons of the Ancients National Monument (CANM) in Montezuma County, Colorado, requested a Class III intensive pedestrian survey of portions of the Veach Acquisition within CANM in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). The project area consisted of three noncontiguous survey areas encompassing 626 acres, largely within a lithic landscape. Many identified archaeological sites reflected the Mesa Verde Ancestral Pueblo occupation of CANM, some corresponded to Late Archaic period and Basketmaker II period use of the area, and others showed evidence of historic-period Navajo and Ute occupation. All sites were recorded to BLM/CANM standards, and Logan Simpson prepared National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) recommendations for each site and evaluated potential effects of ground disturbing activities, when present.
