Tempe Rural Road Fiber Optic Archaeological Monitoring

Logan Simpson completed archaeological monitoring for a fiber optic and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) installation project within the City of Tempe (City), Maricopa County, Arizona. Using a combination of trenching and directional drilling, the City, with assistance from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), installed 9 miles of communication infrastructure within this highly urbanized section of the Rural Road right of way. The archaeological monitoring was conducted along the frontage of three known prehistoric archaeological sites in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Several artifacts were identified and documented as part of this monitoring activity with no effect on the project schedule or budget.
