Logan Simpson developed the first Travel Management Plan (TMP) for the Steese National Conservation Area (NCA) in Alaska, covering approximately 1.2 million acres near Fairbanks. Under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, the NCA was designated in the 1980’s in order to protect resources and provide a primitive backcountry experience. The NCA consists of two units split by the Steese Highway and State Lands, with the Birch Creek Wild and Scenic River located in the south unit.

Visitors to the area often enjoy fishing, camping, hiking, picking berries, and many other activities, with little encounters from others, making the experience unique. This project involved route evaluations, public engagement, and an environmental assessment (EA) for areas rich in resources, including Birch Creek Wild and Scenic River, critical habitats for caribou and Dall sheep, and various recreational opportunities, such as the Pinnell Mountain National Recreational Trail (NRT).
