Kennecott groundbreakers-the history of mining in the Oquirrh mountains

Rio Tinto Kennecott (RTK) Public History Website

Kennecott-Groundbreakers.com is a vibrant public history website that celebrates the legacy of mining in Utah’s Oquirrh Mountains. Developed by Logan Simpson in collaboration with the website developer, Topham Guerin, for Rio Tinto Kennecott, the site invites visitors to explore the people, places, and events that shaped one of the state’s most enduring industries.
Logan Simpson’s cultural resources staff conducted extensive archival research and authored historical articles on topics such as the Kennecott Neighborhood Theater, the dramatic Rafael Lopez manhunt, and the Lark Post Office. The team also curated and digitized thousands of historic materials to make them publicly accessible. An interactive map and a collection of oral histories animate the past with lived experiences. Kennecott-Groundbreakers.com brings the mining community’s stories to life—preserving their memory and connecting future generations with the rich history of the Oquirrh Mountains.
