Uncovering history through a Section 110 survey

Canyons of the Ancients National Monument Inventory

Logan Simpson performed a Class III intensive pedestrian survey for the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument (CANM) in Montezuma County, Colorado. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) requested the survey within portions of the Veach Acquisition within CANM in furtherance of its obligations under Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). The project area consisted of three non-contiguous survey areas situated in a lithic landscape and encompassing 626 acres. Identified archaeological sites were recorded to BLM/CANM standards, reflecting the deep history at CANM, and spanned the Late Archaic and Basketmaker II periods, through Mesa Verde Ancestral Pueblo, to historical-period Navajo and Ute occupation. Logan Simpson prepared National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) avoidance recommendations for each site to assist the BLM with future management decisions.
