Visitor management framework with restored wildlife habitat and riparian corridor
East Big Thompson River Natural Area Management Plan
Logan Simpson developed a Natural Area Management Plan along the East Big Thompson River. The team worked with Open Lands & Trails staff to define a vision for the long-term management of conserved properties in the easternmost portion of the Big Thompson River. The corridor has tremendous potential for multi-use and water trails, birdwatching, fishing, and interpretation as part of the City’s Open Lands system. To prepare for the final plan, Logan Simpson’s team created resource maps, facilitated a site visit with City and partner staff, and synthesized the key features, opportunities and challenges graphically. During the second phase of the project, Logan Simpson conducted a workshop to define the recreational program, and articulate project vision/goals. Preliminary alternatives for trailheads, trail alignments, and management zones were also explored. Logan Simpson’s team also identified areas where the wildlife habitat and ecological function of the site could be enhanced since it has been so greatly impacted by mining activities. The last step of this project included the preparation of a preliminary preferred plan and initial budgetary cost that was refined through staff, landowners, and the Open Lands Advisory Committee.
