Arizona’s crown jewel: reopening State Route 88 for all to enjoy

ADOT SR 88 Apache Trail

Logan Simpson assisted ADOT with the preparation of environmental documentation for a road improvement project on SR 88, an ADOT roadway within easement on Tonto National Forest (TNF) lands. This portion of SR 88 was extensively damaged by flooding and a large rockslide. The improvements included excavation, rock and debris removal, slope stabilization, rock bolts, retaining walls, new culverts and other drainage improvements, vegetation removal, and signage. As part of the Design Concept Report (DCR) process, Logan Simpson prepared an Environmental Overview (EO) to conduct a preliminary review to guide the design process and minimize environmental impacts. The EO also provided guidance on the level of effort for obtaining environmental clearance associated with the proposed improvements. During the DCR process, Logan Simpson facilitated one public meeting attended by over 250 members of the public. Logan Simpson assisted in preparing environmental clearance documents including a biological evaluation, visual resources and Clean Water Act memorandums, and agency scoping reports. Cultural resources work included a report, damage assessment, and avoidance area documentation. Logan Simpson also assisted with coordination with TNF, ADOT, State Historic Preservation Office, and Arizona Game and Fish Department. During construction, Logan Simpson assisted ADOT and the contractor with biological migratory bird nest surveys.
