Logan Simpson’s visual resource management team inventoried more than 300,000 acres in New Mexico‚Äôs Rio Grande del Norte National Monument for the BLM. The monument has rich geologic, heritage, cultural, and recreational resources. The inventory area contains a wide variety of scenic landscapes with geologically and topographically diverse features such as volcanic cinder cone mountains; scenic river canyons; rolling hills; broad, expansive plains; and diverse vegetation. Prominent scenic areas include the Rio Grande Gorge, the Wild Rivers Zone of the Rio Grande Gorge Special Recreation Management Area, the Taos Valley Overlook, and the Wild Rivers Backcountry Byway. Notable scenic areas surrounding the Monument include the Sangre de Cristo and Taos mountains. The four key objects of value the Monument protects are geology, ecological diversity, wildlife, and cultural and historic resources.
